PREFACE
There are four volumes that support the Corps Battle Simulation (CBS). The purpose of this package is to provide the trainer a reference guide for the development of CBS functional instruction and also to provide the trainer with information not readily available in other reference documents. Volume 1 contains a CBS training Pre-exercise Checklist, an Administrative Data Sheet and General Subject Sections. Volumes 2, 3, and 4 comprise all Ground Maneuver, Combat Support, Combat Service Support and Aviation Sections, Hands on Exercises, and Paper Copies of Slides. Additionally, within each volume is a portion that encompasses functionality affected when CBS is part of the Confederation with AWSIM, CSSTSS, RESA or MTWS.
The simulation community has discretionary use of the reference guide package. It is structured to allow each site latitude in selection of appropriate volumes and separate sections required to meet the objectives of a simulation driven training event. All material is generic and can be altered to meet local requirements.
Prior to presentation of the sections contained in these volumes, instructors should review this package to insure an accurate presentation of the material. Additionally, the CBS Pre-exercise Checklist, contained in Vol. 1, is provided to facilitate the instructional staffs in preparation for training. The Administrative Checklist, also included in Vol. 1, supplies the Tasks, Conditions and Standards required of the trainer.
The proponent of this publication is the National Simulation Center (NSC). Submit changes for improving this publication to the Director, National Simulation Center, ATTN: ATZL-NSC-M, 410 Kearney Avenue, Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas 66027-1306.
Magnetic media is provided to all major simulation sites as part of the package. In addition, the CBS NSC Support Team has an FTP site available for the downloading and uploading of files. The address of the server is 160.149.207.230
. Contact the NSC for the user name and password. It is not a privileged account, but will allow for only the transfer of files.
Updates to the Trainer Reference Guide Package will be provided as new CBS versions or corrections are fielded. Each update will contain, at a minimum, an errata sheet detailing new information.
When used in this publication, "he, him, his, and men" represent both genders, unless specifically stated. ADMINISTRATIVE DATA SHEET
SUBJECT AREA: CBS Trainers Reference Guide
TERMINAL LEARNING OBJECTIVE: This document provides the CBS trainer with reference materials for the development of a CBS controller training course. The course must adequately provide the workstation controller with a basic understanding of the purpose of CBS and its various databases; how the system is designed as well as how the model works in various Rotary/Fixed wing, Combat Support, Combat Service Support and Maneuver/conflict situations; the makeup of a "workstation"; and the controller's role and function within the CBS system.
Additionally, the Trainer Reference Guide provides a Hands on exercise for most of the functional areas and a slide presentation for each section. These can be used by the trainers for actual training or for reference in the development of their own.
TASK: The trainer must teach the workstation controller adequately to exhibit an understanding of how CBS works and be able to identify how CBS imitates military field operations and how the results are portrayed as well as how the controller, as a Blue or OPFOR force controller interacts with the computer simulations system and the players to realize the training objectives of an exercise.
CONDITIONS: The trainer must be able to present the information in a classroom environment, without notes or references.
STANDARDS: The trainer must require the workstation controller to demonstrate the functional use of the CBS system hardware and software in support of his role and functions in dealing with the types of problems and making the kinds of decisions that he would have to under actual battle conditions.
TOTAL NUMBER OF LESSON PLANS: 27
ESTIMATED TOTAL INSTRUCTIONAL TIME:
Maneuver (Blue/OPFOR) Controller 22 Hours
Logistics (Blue) Controller 21 Hours
Logistics (OPFOR) Controller 18 Hours
Rotary Wing Controller 20 Hours
Tactical Air Controller 20 Hours
TOTAL INSTRUCTIONAL PERSONNEL REQUIREMENTS - Exercise Dependent
ADDITIONAL MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Projection Device
Set of Workstation Equipment
Pointers
Microphone and Amplifier (Optional)
Copies of the CBS User's Handbook, Jet Propulsion Laboratory
California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA (JPL),
Copies of lesson plans and supplemental hand
Copies of Workstation Battle Books CBS PRECHECKLIST
Potential or actual changes to existing facilities, equipment or the CBS database mandates close inspection of various key functions prior to a CBS exercise or training session. The following items, if addressed at the appropriate time prior to the exercise or training, will resolve most potential problems.
GENERAL:
Exercise director/planners/senior controller must meet with designated workstation team chiefs, preferably prior to the start of training, to define team chief duties, including:
Team building between Exercise Director or his representative, Senior Controller and Team Chiefs.
How will the Senior Controller control simulation requirements. (meetings, updates, etc.). Will there be a Senior Controller and Workstation OIC briefing during the shift change? Will there be a method for passing out known problems and other types of information?
Consideration of training objectives, OPLAN, resolution of gameissues and organizational procedures.
Military related controlissues.
Implementation of "workarounds."
Role Playing and how proper radio/communications procedures can enhance the exercise.
Shift change times and "battle" handover. Will this affect the meal times?
Has sufficient time been allocated for finalizing/loading STARTEX data? What controllers will be in the BSC during this period?
Will Change Requests (Test Incident Reports/Software Change Requests) and/or any questionnaires be administered to the training audience? If so, when will they be distributed and who is responsible for them?
Have workstation monitors (instructors) been assigned for the duration of the exercise? What procedures will be established to ensure the workstation controllers get timely assistance when they have problems and/or questions? Will a help desk be set up close to the Senior Control/Technical Control cells?
Is the training classified? If so, have you allocated enough time on the schedule for inprocessing and for passing through "security" each day?
TRAINING:
Conduct pre-exercise meeting between trainers and exercise planners to insure that exercise training objectives and Op Order concepts are understood. Additionally, verify procedures for assignment of controllers to workstations and what will be covered in the exercise planners' overall orientation to the controllers.
What game speed will be utilized to enhance training, particularly completion of Hands on Training?
Are workstations logged in properly with the appropriate orders for the appropriate units/functions?
Has every reasonable option been considered to keep the number of controllers at an adequate level of staffing? If too many controllers report for training, how will they be handled? If not enough controllers report for training, how will you request additional controllers?
Trainers must review pertinent database screens for training/exercise related data.
Will the training classroom area support the training required? Do not underestimate the importance of this action.
Trainers should be advised by the system administrator of any orders or functions in the game that have been disabled.
Have practical exercises been reproduced in sufficient quantities?
What offsupplemental modules will be used? Who will teach them and when will they be taught?
Who is the training audience? For example, determine whether the commanders and staff are in the field as players or in the battle simulation center as controllers, and adjust training examples accordingly.
Have you prepared for the practical exercises?
Will someone create global Control Lines and Standard Routes for the training phase? If so, are they the same ones that will be used for the exercise? If so, have you coordinated to have the orders put into a "stuff" file so that they can be "stuffed" prior to the exercise starting?
Will a barrier plan be put in for the training/mini-exercise? If so, is this the same barrier plan that will be used for the exercise? If so, have you coordinated to have the orders put into a "stuff" file so that they can be "stuffed" prior to the exercise starting?
Will Scan Reports be used? If so, are all the Scan Reports classes being taught at about the same time (This will facilitate the technicians being able to switch over from "printed reports" to "scan reports.")?
Are the classes being taught on a staggered schedule? For example, are the Maneuver controllers in class while the Admin/Log controllers are conducting Hands on Training? This will help ensure that each controller gets the most hands on practice possible.
DATABASE:
Are templates correct?
Do units possess appropriate equipment and supplies to perform tasks they expect to perform during the exercise?
What stockage objectives and onhand quantities have Blue exercise planners agreed on for personnel replacement detachments and Class VII supply points? Are the proper figures entered prior to the start of training?
While loading STARTEX data, will only the WS team chief and an assistant be present in the workstation? Most controllers are not needed in the BSC during loading.
How and when will STARTEX information be relayed to the players? What reports on personnel, equipment, supplies and maneuver activities must be provided to players prior to STARTEX?
Will the workstation "battlebooks" be available before training begins? This is critical to controllers understanding the exercise organization.
Have you checked which database and videodisk are being used in the exercise to verify the number and level of map scales?
Do the airbases have authorization to handle all types of ammunition?
MINI
Will the exercise OPLAN or a training OPLAN be utilized for the miniexercise?
Are units properly aligned to begin the mini
Have barriers/obstacles been installed? Are these the same barriers/obstacles that will be used in the exercise? If so, are you going to create a "stuff" file?
Have global control lines and standard routes been created and distributed? Are these the same lines/routes that will be used in the exercise? If so, are you going to create a "stuff" file?
Will the controllers be required to "rehearse" with the players? If so, have the players been given the miniercise start data?
Will any workstation be designated as a "global" workstation for the purposes of creating, distributing and deleting global Standard Routes
